I WISH I thought too much. Unfortunately, it's all winging it over here.

I'm waayyy to anal-retentive to "wing" anything. Last year I convinced myself that I didn't need to write anything overly silly to move the story along. Of course, I then ran out of steam somewhere at the 60% mark, and hopped around a lot to make up the word count.

I'm trying to have enough going this time that I won't suddenly feel at sea with no land in site. Better to keep swimming in the same direction -- December -- and not worry about it. (He says, worrying about it.)

I'm struggling because the only plot I actually have is one I don't want to give the NaNo treatment. And although I've joked about other ways of pulling a plot out of mid-air, none of the ideas I've come up with that way really appeal to me.

I suppose writing this particular story badly is better than not writing it at all. The likelihood of my getting 50k words of it down without serious motivation is practically nil. But even so...

Wait, so you already have it all plotted out? I've never done it that way... I just white knuckle it day by day without a clue.

All plotted? Oh hell no.

What I do have is a lot of scenes figured out, and I've been jotting down character backstories, and in some cases a timeline (gasp!) which would have really helped me out last year.

I"m trying to adhere to the "let your characters steer the plot" maxim from so much of my summer reading, but I do have some major landmarks laid out that I want them to aim for. I'm worried that I'm setting out too much in advance, though, and that I'm going to lose steam/interest, or my characters will revolt and insist that I write about bloodthirsty warrior bunnies or the like.

I'd rather round out the 50K with the actual story I've been working on.
