Everything Skeu is Old Again

For those Apple iDevice caretakers who are mourning the replacement of their textured, shadowed UI with the new candy-colored iOS 7 retinal riot, I present an island of skeuomorphic calm:

Faux Woodgrain, a la Remington Typewriter

Space-age plastic woodgrain, spotted at Goodwill. Those who do not learn their design history are doomed to re-implement it!

What IS that? A descendant of the 1040? Or of the Quiet Riter? The weird plastic awesomness is messing with my sense of scale.

(I would have brought that home, too. Simulated woodgrain ftw!).

Wow, someone gave me one of those things just last month. There are two mechanical issues: it skips spaces when typing like the big Royals tend to do, but I can't get it resolved with cleaning; and a number of the key mechanisms literally rub against one another, so that the keys balk. They aren't bent and there isn't any room to bend them to ease the problem. Any ideas? It would probably be a decent typer if I could fix these problems, but for now it's sitting in a corner.

@Duffy: It's a standard machine (desktop), I don't know the model. It's huge, though, as you might guess.

@Brian: Deep cleaning is about the limit of my expertise. I know that you can diagnose an escapement problem by typing the same character over and over and looking for a regular skip:

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx = OK
xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx = Uh oh...

Hopefully it's the former, and not the latter.
