Time Slip

How did it get to be almost the middle of September already? It's been over two weeks since a blog update from me, and I don't even have the excuse of taking a vacation to cover for it. I've been utterly swamped at work, and that's not leaving me much energy or inclination for outside pursuits, beyond keeping my reading list stocked and my library card in regular use. There are worse ways to pass the time.

The kids are in school, fall sports are under way, and the calendar is creeping towards November whether or not I am prepared for it. My summer rewrite plans hit a bit of a snag when I realized that the draft I was rewriting was exceptionally, deadly dull stuff. I don't think I'm being overly self-critical here. If anything, I'm pleased that I could distance myself enough from the writing to realize that large chunks of it are simply idling or linguistic plate-spinning, when what I need is a good crash and some broken crockery to liven things up. I'm not sure how to approach a fix, though. That's put me in a bit of a writing funk, too.

I'm still here, though. Still breathing and demonstrating a fair amount of restraint at the odd typewriter that's crossed my path. There's a small rhino on my desk, reminding me that soon we'll be slipping into that annual word frenzy and the working vacation of NaNo. September is beginning to slip by, but I won't let the season of the Brigade pass.

I am excited to join your brigade for Nano this year. I will definitely have to sign up.

Also, is there an official Nano page for the brigade? I couldn't quite find it...

Yes! I too am looking forward to Nano!

It's funny how time runs straight past you like that, sometimes leaving your head spinning and sometimes so ninja-like you don't even notice...until a whole year has passed you by (or more). I think it does it for its own amusement, simply to vex us humans, the only animals on this planet who acknowledge, use, and view time as a linear measurement. I apologize for waxing philosophical, but indeed, this whole year has crept straight past me through the shadows.

If you want broken crockery, introduce a rhino. It escapes from a zoo and your protagonist has to deal with it gaining entrance to his house via an arcadia door. Perhaps he has to hide it to prevent authorities from coming to his house and finding something he needs to keep private?

That oughta liven things up!

Ken, there's no "official" page beyond the discussion forum entry that gets set up on the NaNo site (and mercifully wiped each year), and maybe the flickr group.

In the off-season, the Brigade is a migratory beast, wandering around the plains, but come November, they all come stampeding home. It's quite a spectacle. A weird, weird spectacle.

Ah. I completely forgot that it got wiped each year. That would explain the lack of it on the Nano page. Really, I meant the discussion forum entry, yes. Awesome. Can't wait to sign up.
